Creator Commentary

Well this is it, here she begins. Both the strip, her characters, the name, the site, EVERYTHING came out of no-where. I was amazed and shocked, but definitely excited. I had my fear, of course, that it wouldn’t last. I do have a tendency to start something nifty and never finish it. But this really picked up, everyone loved it, so I kept going on it. Definitely something I enjoy doing as much as I do hearing people laugh about it to this day!

As for “where did she begin?”, well of that I am not completely sure. I do know it’s seed was planted on my Spring Break of 2002. I was with my boyfriend (now ex boyfriend) in California. There were a number of events on that trip that could have inspired such a spontaneous creation. Shall I list some? Sure, why not. Perhaps it was because we were on the biggest plane ever, and it nearly fell into “the bay”. Perhaps it was my ER visit from hell (6 hours, all because I had strep). Perhaps it was one of the most beautiful city parks ever, complete with authentic Japanese Tea Garden. Perhaps it was the scariest new-age broads, at the dumpiest hole in the wall chinese restaurant, talking about “vibrating at the level of Christ”. Perhaps it was all of those, perhaps none. I like to believe, that like primal chaotic soup, they all played a role in her generation. Not by perhaps creating the strip directly, but by summoning the Muse that sat on my head until the strip was designed and birthed by being posted to the net on March 7th, 2002. Yet, regardless of how it came about during that Spring Break, Oh My Gods! was indeed born. A frantic outcry against all that was simple, beautiful, and sane. Or something like that.

Man...

...I've read through the first couple years of this beastie so many times, not quite getting through, having to do something else, not being able to stand jumping in in the middle, and starting over.

Groovy comic, though, Shivian. Mega groovy.

Yerf, and all that good rot. XD

2000 Strips!

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been this long. I’ve officially now done 2000 strips. It doesn’t feel that long, and frankly, it’s kind of weird to think that I’ve created something 2000 times. In the end, though, I am very thankful to have such a great audience who has stuck with the strip for so long, and to have new readers each and every day! Here’s to the next 2000!

PS: If you missed the 2000th strip, check it out here

Year 4 Anthology NOW AVAILABLE!

Hot on the heels of the release of the Complete Year Three Anthology, the Forth Year anthology of the famed comic strip is now available!, and if your curious you can even take a look inside.

(Of course the first three years of anthologies are still available)

What People are Saying about Oh My Gods!

“This is some seriously clever occult humor! Hey, someone had to take the piss out of NeoPaganism. Leave it to Shivian Balaris to apply his observations and critiques in the form of entertaining comic art. For a lighthearted, fun, and educational perspective of our weird and Witchy ways, Oh My Gods! is the place to turn.”
Raven Digitalis, author of Shadow Magick Compendium & Goth Craft

Litha Theme!

Since I won’t be here during official Litha (I’ll be at PSG) I turned on the Litha theme for the site. Remember, you can always change your themes in your user settings!

Year 3 Anthology NOW AVAILABLE!

The third year anthology of the famed comic strip is now available!, and if your curious you can even take a look inside.

(Of course the Complete Year One Anthology and Complete Year Two Anthology are also still available!)

What People are Saying about Oh My Gods!

“An irreverent romp through our modern pagan culture … its humor spotlights the foibles and fun of being pagan in the 21st century … it always adds a smile to my day.”
Dana Haefne, owner of Kamala Health & Beauty

Latest Updates

Not only are there new strips for all of May, but I’ve updated some of the site’s functionality as well. Hopefully now some of the problems with Captcha (et al) will be gone. Let me know if anything is broken the moment you find it broken using the contact page.

Lastly, due to the number of problems it was causing, the Fan Map has been moved to it’s own page in the Fans section. Enjoy!
